Come Visit Me at Medium!

April 2019
I'm finding my way as a writer, and sometimes that means exploring where and how I'm sharing my writing. I started writing at Medium in March, and it's been pretty amazing so far. I'm still writing here, but am over there more often, so please come see me there or visit my main page.

Read in 2018

My reading goal for 2018 was 35 books, and I didn't quite make it.  I haven't made my goal for the last several years, and for 2019 I'm setting it at 30 books.  In recent years, most of my book intake has been through audiobooks, and this year I really want to try to read more actual books.  The other night I was feeling particularly anxious and unsettled and restless, so I picked up the Steven King book I recently checked out from the library (because we all get an uncontrollable SK urge now and then right?).  After reading, I felt calmer and more grounded.  I don't always think about the amount of time I spend in front of electronics, but I think it would probably be good for me (and for all of us) to slow down and pick up a book more often.

In 2018 my reading focused largely on memoirs by women.  In 2019 I will likely continue that trend, but am also going to finally try to dig in to some of the books on my shelves about writing.

The Last Black Unicorn
really liked it
Funny, honest, sometimes raw, and very entertaining.

Good in a Crisis: A Memoir of Divorce, Dating, and Other Near-Death Experiences
did not like it
I didn't really like this book. In fact, I considered abandoning it. I thought some of the last 20% but even then I don't feel like I got a very good idea of how having this near-death experience changed the author's life or what it all ...

I don't really care if Dan Brown is the best author. He definitely uses significantly more words than he needs to get where he's going, but he writes good stories and they're thought compelling. I enjoyed this story a lot.

A beautiful book about motherhood, womanhood, self, relationships, and gender. This was one of those amazing cases of checking something out because it happened to be available, and then loving it.

A Mother's Reckoning: Living in the Aftermath of Tragedy
it was amazing
This is one of the bravest, most heartbreaking books I have ever encountered. It is fascinating and wrenching from start to finish. Sue Klebold went through the worst a mother can, and somehow not only kept going but has managed to use h...

Not That Kind of Girl: A Young Woman Tells You What She's "Learned"

I liked this book, and a lot of parts of it were really interesting and insightful. I did have a little trouble with it because it wasn't very cohesive. I felt like the narrative jumped very suddenly from one thing to another, and at tim...

This book had been on my to-read list since it came out, and I was feeling a little bit salty about Amy Schumer after her newest movie release. But, I had a road trip and needed something to listen to and it was miraculously available, s...

This is an incredible example of how the human spirit can survive through unimaginable things. Maude Julien lived through a childhood most of us can't even imagine, and yet she found hope and beauty in small things - the animals she befr...
