Six

Dear Danny,

I'm not gonna lie, things have been a bit rough lately.  Having to suddenly move and at the same time having me around all. the. time. has been a hard transition for you.  Pair that with the fact that Kindergarten ended, which is always a big adjustment, and things are kind of all over the place. Things in the last few months have been hard for me too, and it's been one of those times when parenting has been a bit rough.  Some days you didn't want to go to school, don't want to get your shoes on, dawdle dawdle, don't want to sleep in your own bed.  That last one is especially hard for me since we moved in with Grandma and my room is my escape and place to relax at night.

This summer, I'm not working, and you have told me that you want to stay home with me all summer, pretty much every day.  I definitely need breaks, but I'm trying to turn all the turmoil in the past few months into a silver lining.  I'm hoping that this summer will bring relaxing and lots of adventures.  We can finally go to the FIG and museum, do Mindport together, and hopefully spend lots of time at the pool and beach soaking in the sunshine!

You had your first year of elementary school this year, and you did amazing.  Watching you walk into the school on your last day with your giant backpack got me all choked up.  We were lucky enough to get the most exceptional Kindergarten teacher whose personality and style and loving care of you and your classmates was a perfect fit.  You're incredibly smart - you are able to read books several grade levels above yours, and are great at math as well.  You're curious and inquisitive and I'm excited to watch you succeed in school.  I do worry that when you get older you'll get bored at school, so I'll be sure to watch extra close and do what I can to enrich your learning experience.

You are my baby, still, six years later.  I'm not sure that will ever change.  You hug me at bedtime and tell me you love me so, so, so much, and then you close your eyes and smile as you go to sleep and the day drifts away.  You are still little - only 38 pounds even though you're 6 years old.  I still carry you in from the car when you fall asleep, and I wonder if you'll have a growth spurt in the next year like Sam did when he approached 7.

At the end of the school year we got to go to New Jersey for your Aunt Lianna's high school graduation, which was a lot of fun.  It was fun to travel with you and Sam now that you're older and to have that adventure together.  Sometimes it's really hard being a single mom, but I also hope that the bond we have and the adventures we go on will keep us close forever.

This year something new happened, as Scott and I started dating and we talked about moving in together - hopefully by this time next year we'll all be a family in our own little home.  It has been really nice having a positive male role model for you, and you have definitely developed a great relationship with him.  I can't wait for us to all be in one place again, and I think it will be great for you.

I love you so much.  Even when things are hard, you make me smile, and I especially love going out and doing things with you, like in the last week of school when we went downtown and just walked around.  I love watching you learn and discover new things.  I love watching you and Sam's friendship develop as you get older, and I hope that will continue into your adulthood.  I can't wait to see what the next year brings for you.

Love,
Mommy
